Horizontal collector wells (Ranney-type) draw water through multiple gravel-packed lateral screens projecting from a central caisson. They deliver high yields from riverbank and alluvial aquifers — and, like all wells, their laterals plug over time with iron, manganese, and bacterial encrustation, reducing specific capacity.
Why laterals are hard to rehabilitate
The laterals are long, horizontal, gravel-packed screens. Cleaning only their inner surface — for example by jetting alone — removes surface deposits but leaves incrustation in the slots, gravel pack, and near-screen formation. As with vertical wells, the flow restriction usually sits beyond the inner screen face.
How impulse treatment is applied
A nitrogen-driven AirShock® impulse generator is run through each lateral, firing automatically to deliver pressure pulses to the screen–aquifer interface. The pulses and the surging gas bubble agitate and scour mineral and biological deposits from the screen and draw them back for removal — reaching into the gravel pack rather than stopping at the screen wall. For horizontal laterals the tool is deployed on a centralizing arrangement so the pulses scour and flush the lateral while limiting disturbance to the thin surrounding gravel pack. Typical practice pairs an initial jetting pass (surface cleaning) with impulse treatment (depth of penetration).
Documented result
The first known US application of pressure-pulse technology to a horizontal collector well — a 10-mgd municipal collector on the Missouri River — was documented in the Journal AWWA (Slone, McLaughlin & Troutt, September 2007). The project reported an approximately 72% increase in the well's specific capacity, with drawdown at the design rate roughly halved, and a more even flow distribution across the eight laterals.
Where it fits
Collector-well rehabilitation is a specialized application: access, lateral condition, and gravel-pack thickness all shape the treatment plan. Impulse treatment is a proven option where lateral screens have plugged and jetting alone has not restored capacity.
