Deploying a downhole tool in a deep water well is a different problem from spooling a pressure-washer or workshop hose. A reel built for well service has to handle several demands at once, and it is where each of them meets that ordinary reels fail:

Every reel is built to the job, in one of three drive types. The two most common for well service are shown below; manual and OEM configurations are available on request.

A powered reel — hydraulic or electric — built for continuous high-pressure duty. It needs an automatic brake to hold the load, level rewind for clean spooling of long hose, and a high-pressure rotating swivel so pressure is maintained while the drum turns. Ordinary garden or workshop reels cannot carry the hose length, hold the suspended tool weight, or pass pressure through the swivel.
